Responsibilities*
The Division of General Surgery is seeking a Certified Physician’s Assistant (PA-C) to join a busy, collegial clinical group in the Department of Surgery.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will participate in some outpatient clinical activities of the Section of Surgical Oncology, and some outpatient clinical activities on the section of Hepato Pancreatic Biliary (HPB) surgery, including the pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and longitudinal care of patients with malignant or oncology conditions. The APP will work collaboratively with Division faculty to ensure timely patient access and maintain the highest standards of patient care. Specifically, the APP will: (i) conduct initial evaluations of patients; both in-person and virtually (ii) provide clinical follow-up for patients with benign or malignant conditions; (iii) provide outpatient pre & post-operative care both in-person and virtually; (iv) perform minor clinic-based such as intralesional steroid injections of the breast and breast aspirations; and (v) conduct ongoing return evaluation and management of patients.
The APP will conduct independent visits in-person and virtually. Specific education and hands-on training tailored to the candidate’s previous experience will be provided by attending Physicians and APPs in the Division and/or Department.
In consultation with attending surgeons, the APP will also:
Interview patients to obtain a detailed patient history.
Perform and document physical examinations by compiling and recording detailed narrative evaluations/dictations.
Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic and minor surgical procedures in clinic.
Order and interpret diagnostic testing and imaging.
Act as a patient liaison before and after surgery(s) to provide information and coordinate care.
Assist with outpatient pre-op and post-operative care including MiChart In basket follow-up, telephone calls, e-visits, and e-consults.
Independently conduct in-person and virtual outpatient evaluations of selected patients.
Independently provide follow-up care of selected patients.
Provides independent routine Hepatology, Pancreatic and Biliary services effectively and efficiently.
Communicate and coordinate care with referring and consultant physicians.
Make appropriate referrals to internal and external providers and facilities.
Order and prescribe of medications, including refills, in accordance with statutes, rules, and regulations of the State of Michigan.
Required Qualifications*
Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
Current DEA registration required
ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)
NOTE:
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Desired Qualifications*
Two (2) or more years, within the past four (4) years, direct patient care experience as an APP, with adult patients in an in-patient or out-patient setting
Recent (within the past two (2) years), direct patient care experience as an APP, with adult hepatology patients and/ or breast cancer patients.
Experience working in the ambulatory care setting.
Demonstrated active participation in professional development and research.
Demonstrated experience, as an APP, working with adult oncology patients.
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift/Hours/Days: Day shift Monday through Friday; hours and days variable to meet clinic needs.
Location: primarily based at the Main University Hospital (Taubman Center and/or Cancer Center). Potential to travel to offsite clinics to provide coverage with expansion of the service line. Must have own transportation. All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
