East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites qualified applicants to apply for this regular position in the Water Operations Department.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled vegetation control, gardening, grounds maintenance, and fire prevention and mitigation work in the upkeep of unimproved land, landscaped areas, and grounds around offices, filter plants, maintenance yards, and other facilities.
Examples of duties include:
- Sweeping, raking, picking up, and disposing of leaves, litter, and other debris from surfaces surrounding facilities and reservoir roofs; cleans drains.
- Clearing areas around facilities of weeds, brush, hedges, shrubs, and small trees.
- Assisting in and learning the pruning of a variety of trees, shrubs, and hedges.
- Irrigating planted areas according to an established schedule; learning to install, troubleshoot, and make repairs to sprinkler systems.
- Learning the proper mowing and general maintenance of unimproved land, lawns, and other ground covers.
- Preparing soil for planting; assisting in the transplanting of seedlings, shrubs, and trees.
- Assisting in and learning the proper and safe methods of spraying for the control of weeds, insects, and plant diseases.
- Performing a variety of general gardening tasks such as fertilizing, mulching, and staking of plants.
- Performing digging of drainage ditches to support flood control measures and enhance drainage systems.
- Using a variety of hand tools and power tools in the performance of the work.
- Observing proper safety precautions, maintaining tools, equipment, and the work site in a safe condition; erecting street warning signs and other safety devices as directed.
- Keeping detailed records of hours worked, work performed, and equipment and materials used; monitoring and documenting weather and field conditions, evaluating and documenting alternatives considered, and use of pesticides.
- May direct the work of unskilled temporary helpers on a specific assignment.
- Driving a truck, specialized tractor, spray rig, or other vehicles in the performance of the work; operating and towing a variety of grounds maintenance equipment.
- Entering data into automated or computer-based work management systems, or other electronic or computer systems and applications.
- Performing other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Grounds Maintenance Specialist I is the entry level class in this series. Individuals receive training and experience in vegetation control, gardening, grounds maintenance, and fire prevention and mitigation work and perform the basic duties under supervision.
The salary range is $5,975 per month increasing to $6,274, $6,588, and $6,917 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

2. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to an online written test, tentatively scheduled for late January 2023. The written test subject areas will include Mathematical Calculations, Tools, Equipment, and Materials, Reading Comprehension, Mechanical Ability, and Safety. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3. Those candidates scoring highest on the written test will be invited to a panel interview scheduled for early-February.
4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
5. The probation period for this position is 6 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
