Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (KCPA) is accepting applications for a Theatrical Stitcher to create costumes, accessories, craft, or special costume projects as assigned at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Costume Shop.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Stitcher:
- Responsible for the manufacturing and or repairs either by hand or machine for the costumes assigned to them.
- Manufactures historical and contemporary clothing (Costumes including but not limited to coats, vests, pants, frock coats, doublets, jerkins, breeches, knickers, skirts, blouses, dresses and appropriate underclothing).
- Operates a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to: single needle industrial, industrial zig-zag, overlock, merrow or serger, domestic straight and zig-zag machines.
- Completes alterations from fittings.
- First Hand:
- Responsible for the deciphering, cutting, layout fabric for mock-ups and final garments based on the instructions and patterns created by the Draper.
- Use basic and advanced techniques to achieve high standards of fabric cutting.
- Under the Direction from the Cutter/Draper and/or First Hand, alter Pattern pieces.
- Responsible for developing patterns for facings and linings based on directions from the Cutter/Draper or First Hand.
- May supervise and hand off sewing to student workers or extra -help stitchers.
- Act as stitcher to student drapers and student first hands providing questions and insight as needed to achieve the desired outcome.
- Use industry standard knowledge, techniques, practices to discuss, inform, and educate student drapers and first hands on best practices and communication skills.
- Provide stitching support for other production departments as needed.
- Monitors and inventories costume shop supplies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
The Costume Shop is a busy place with numerous people coming in and out. This can ma ke for a noisy work area. In addition, there can be numerous interruptions and at times, the stitcher may be asked to work on different projects before finishing the current project. Sitting in one place for multiple hours at a time. Standing in one place for multiple hours at a time. Lifting 30 pounds.Minimum Qualifications:
2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:
A. College coursework in theater, fine arts, costume construction, design, patterning, or technology, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in costuming.
- Undergraduate course work or workshops in costume construction, patterning or technology.
- Minimum two years in costume production and/or experience in a costume shop.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of specialty needlework techniques including but not limited to beading, embroidery, applique and quilting.
- Demonstrated experience in a variety of hand and machine sewing techniques.
- Ability to safely operate all costume shop equipment.
- Ability to manage time and projects effectively under production deadlines as well as work and make some judgments independently.
- Good interpersonal and communications skills.
- Basic ability to cope with and remain focused in constantly changing projects and active environments.
- Basic working knowledge of fabric types and uses for the stage.
- Basic operation, maintenance, and adjustment, stitching techniques and problem solving of sewing machines.
- Minimum two years professional garment sewing costume shop, alteration shop, tailor’s shop, or equivalent clothing manufacturing capacity.
- Knowledge of taking and recording theatrical measurements.
- Basic working knowledge of costume or fashion history.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3314 - Theatrical Stitcher position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The entry-level salary for this position is $16.46/hr.
