is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Small Animal Biologist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Cancer Institute (NCI) located in Bethesda, MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives
This position will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the NCI/CCR.

Deliverables:
  • Work products and documents related to performing basic and translational research to test hypotheses developed by MyPART leadership; process samples collected by the MyPART network using molecular biology techniques. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to working closely with core facilities and outside vendors to maintain chain of custody of biospecimens and identify any areas for improvement of standard operating procedures; perform molecular, cellular, and microbiology techniques in accordance with Biosafety Level 2 guidelines. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to performing techniques of molecular biology, including PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, TaqMan, gene cloning, vector construction and cell transfection and transduction; perform cell culture, FACS and ELISA. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to updating and maintaining laboratory databases and notebooks and standard operating procedures; collect, analyze and interpret data; prepare reports and summaries based on findings and results; attend and participate in seminars and meetings. - Ad-Hoc
  • Clean Equipment - Bi-Weekly
  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Weekly
  • Work products and documents related to managing health and welfare of mice in animal colony, and to completion of tasks such as culling mice, setting up breeders, measuring tumor growth, and administering experiemental therapies. - Weekly
Work Details:
  • Studies the basic principles of animal life and the effects of varying environmental factors.
  • Perform behavioral assays in association with the primary research project.
  • Coordinate husbandry, animal care and enrichment activities to maintain a clean, safe and regulatory compliant animal research program.
  • Conducts research and performs experiments on the selection and breeding of animals.
  • Work with staff to maintain, breed, genotype and phenotype transgenic animal colony; maintain records of animal colony.
  • Independently perform genotyping of animals.
  • Set up animals to be available in numbers and at the time required.
  • Update animal protocol through the submission of amendments and submission of new animal protocols to ensure necessary animal work for experiments.
  • Provide technical expertise in breeding colony management.
  • Maintain existing database to record all animals in breeding colony, tracking lineage, genotype, birth, death, and experimental use of each animal
  • Maintains animal colonies.
  • Manage and breed animal colonies; genotype animals and report genotyping results to staff.
  • Communicate and collaborate with investigators regarding colony and support duties.
  • Maintain an extensive database repository that tracks the life and health cycles of the entire transgenic colony, including animal breeding, health, and housing areas. 2
  • Inspect all animals each day for viability and health status.
  • Handle animals for hormone injection, mating, timed mating, and other experimental procedures.
  • Work with staff to maintain, breed, genotype and phenotype transgenic animal colony; maintain records of animal colony.
  • Handle, dissect and euthanize animals.
  • Work with staff on maintaining animal colonies, including setting up mating pairs and checking plugs, genotyping animals by tail biopsy, injecting animals with hormones or other compounds; inject cells into immunocompromised animals; monitor and analyze tumor growth.
  • Maintain animal colony, including general husbandry, breeding, plug checks, weaning, tagging animals and obtaining tail or ear snips for genotyping, and euthanasia. 1
  • Performs simple surgeries on animals.
  • Handle, dissect and euthanize animals. 5
  • Handle experimental animals including tail vein injections, administration of anesthesia and monitoring of animal vital signs.
  • Prepares and analyzes animal tissues.
  • Maintain animal lines in transgenic facilities.
  • Perform experiments with primary tissues and cells in culture, utilizing sterile techniques.
  • Harvest and collect animal embryos, tissues, and organs.
  • Manage genotyping of samples of transgenic animals.
  • Maintain and culture human and animal cancer cell lines for experiments.
  • Performs molecular biology techniques.
  • Perform PCR-based genotyping. 3
  • Perform genomic DNA preparation, genotyping and other analyses of animal tissues using DNA extraction and PCR.
  • Perform tissue and cell culture; use sterile technique. 4
  • Carry out molecular biological experiments, including extracting genomic DNA, performing PCR and gel
  • electrophoresis, cloning DNA fragments and preparing plasmid DNA, generating high quality RNA using in vitro transcription.
  • Perform standard molecular biology techniques, including, but not limited to, cloning, in situ hybridization and qPCR.
  • Maintain cell lines and perform basic cell culture assays, including, but not limited to, transfection and immunocytochemistry.
  • Performs immunohistochemistry on animal tissues.
  • Perform apoptosis assays, qtr.-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and molecular cloning techniques.
  • Work with staff to process tissue for immunohistochemistry.
  • Perform Western Blot, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence.
  • Isolate and purify nucleic acid and proteins from tissue culture samples.
  • Perform molecular biology and cloning techniques, tissue histochemistry and immunohistochemistry.
  • Perform basic and translational research to test hypotheses developed by MyPART leadership.
  • Process samples collected by the MyPART network using molecular biology techniques to ensure timely and accurate analysis.
  • Work closely with core facilities and outside vendors to maintain chain of custody of biospecimens and identify any areas for improvement of standard operating procedures.
  • Perform molecular, cellular, and microbiology techniques in accordance with Biosafety
  • Level 2 guidelines and be proficient in mouse handling.
  • Perform administrative duties including ordering, managing budgets under the direction of the MyPART Leadership, maintain written documentation of standard operating procedures and research findings.
  • Train new lab members in lab practices.
  • Assist the MyPART Leadership in drafting protocols for the Institutional Biosafety
  • Committee and Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Perform techniques of molecular biology, including PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, TaqMan, gene cloning, vector construction and cell transfection and transduction.
  • Perform FACS and ELISA.
  • Update and maintain laboratory databases and notebooks.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data.
  • Prepare reports and summaries based on findings and results.

  • Analyze and catalog imaging data from molecular biology and in vitro tissue culture assays.
  • Maintain records of experimental results; work with staff to analyze and interpret data; prepare summaries of laboratory findings.
  • Perform computer analysis and use computer software to prepare images
  • Edits and writes research papers and protocols.
  • Work with staff on the preparation of data and images for use in research presentations and publications.

  • Work with staff on the modification of laboratory protocols and experiments based on literature findings.
  • Search and review literature related to project; summarize and evaluate findings.
  • Document all laboratory procedures, experiments and results; maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases.
  • Develop, validate, perform and interpret a variety of complex experimental techniques and procedures; work with staff to develop procedures addressing new animal study needs, logistics, modifications to standard operating procedures, and/or existing guidelines to resolve technical problems.
  • Collaborate with team members to determine, evaluate and discuss the progress of projects; point out problems and suggest solutions to problems or augmentation of experimental approaches.
  • Participate in developing and performing experiments, organizing protocols and performing technical troubleshooting.
  • Locate and review the literature pertinent to projects to identify the most applicable protocols and methods; perform experiments in accordance with protocols.

  • Min 5 years laboratory exp in molecular biology, cellular biology, microbiology or a related
  • Min 3 years laboratory experience in mouse handling
