The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a results oriented and highly detailed individual to serve as the Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer.
The primary role of the Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer will be to design, implement, and maintain technologies and platforms supporting a complex corporate infrastructure environment that enables business success. This role ensures a high availability of all system components that support internal employee business functions and external customer contact.
Additionally, this position requires comprehensive knowledge and experience in multiple disciplines and areas within information technology as well as a thorough understanding of systems interoperability and provides critical support to enable the activities of peer units within Technology Services.

Additionally, this position requires comprehensive knowledge and experience in multiple disciplines and areas within information technology as well as a thorough understanding of systems interoperability and provides critical support to enable the activities of peer units within Technology Services.
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Designs and delivers infrastructure solutions that are technically sound, resilient to failure, operationally supportable, and meets customer requirements. Delivery of infrastructure solutions includes a variety of skills including infrastructure architecture, hands-on build-out and configuration of a complex infrastructure, as well as project management skills ensuring infrastructure environments are delivered within scope, on-time, and operational.
- Performs detailed technical analysis and monitoring of systems to maintain a secure, highly available IT infrastructure.
- Independently communicates and interacts with other technical staff to analyze requirements and design solutions.
- Manages complex infrastructure deployment initiatives, including task management of team members and providing project management expertise to other technology staff engaged in technology projects.
- Independently validates, troubleshoots, remediates, and documents infrastructure issues impacting the operations of a complex corporate infrastructure including designs, builds, platform implementations and software packages to determine if infrastructure is consistent with business requirements.
- Performs root cause analysis on system and/or functional issues.
- Collaborate in the management and implementation of new technology initiatives.
- Proactively partners with technology customers to identify opportunities to exploit a broad range of existing and planned technology tools to enable business improvement.
- Participates with management, other technical staff and business partners to ensure the strategies, structures, processes and systems actively support the agency’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Stays current on trends and developments in technology and promote best practices relating to systems operational design, systems-oriented architecture, implementation management, etc.
- Prepares and ensures accuracy of documentation, procedures manuals, design infrastructure test plans, and technology platforms.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a closely related field.
Five years experience as an Infrastructure Engineer, Senior Server Engineer or equivalent position.
Five (5) years of IT systems installation and support working with complex systems and 2+ years of experience managing projects, organizing and coordinating multiple work assignments and priorities.
Additional qualifications include:

- Strong project management skills.
- Demonstrated experience in infrastructure systems implementation and support in data center environments.
Working Knowledge and experience in all or most of the following:
- Hyper-Converged Infrastructure
- Nutanix AHV
- Server hardware and operating systems (Windows and Linux.)
- Azure IaaS Administration
- Modern Enterprise Backup Solutions
- Unified Computing System Support, Administration, Architecture & Design
- Azure Active Directory, On-Prem AD, DNS and DHCP Administration
- Server and Network monitoring tools
- Managing Data Center environments, vendors, and associated SLE’s
- PowerShell
- Certificate Authority
- Two-factor Authentication
- Ability to create detailed and complex Visio diagrams.
- Extensive experience with documentation.
- Puppet or other infrastructure orchestration platform
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred certifications: CCNA, NCA, NCP-MCI, VCP, VCAP, MCSE, NCDA, or NCIE.
