Northwest Public Safety is a private, not-for-profit, Regional 9-1-1 Communication Center that has served multiple municipalities throughout Connecticut for over 40 years.

Northwest is currently responsible for dispatching

  • Thirteen (13) EMS Agencies
  • Twelve (12) Fire Departments
  • One (1) Regional ALS Fly Car service
  • Two (2) Law Enforcement Agencies
  • CMED Service (ambulance to hospital communications) for twenty-eight (28) municipalities and six (6) area hospitals.

General Job Description:

  • Promptly answers all incoming 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, collects pertinent information from the caller, determines and assign the level of priority of calls, enters the required information into the Computer Aided Dispatch System, and routes the call to the appropriate dispatcher or other service agency for action
  • Operates a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to review, prioritize, and log information related to Calls for Service
  • Reviews and prioritizes information obtained by other employees in CAD system
  • Determines appropriate number and type of equipment/resources to dispatch
  • Operates radio console to voice-dispatch and monitor radio activity for police, fire, medical, and other emergency services
  • Creates and maintains accurate and well-organized records for documentation and retrieval purposes
  • Monitors and responds to a variety of technical systems and alarms
  • Maintains and projects a positive professional attitude with the public and partner agencies
  • Answers incoming 911 and/or routine phone calls
  • Utilizes critical thinking to make quick decisions and act with reason
  • Remains calm, professional, courteous, and respectful at all times
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure

Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • 18 years of age at time of hire
  • Prior or current Public Safety experience (i.e., field experience as a Fire Fighter, EMT, etc.) OR previous Public Safety Dispatch/Call Taking experience
  • Must type at a net speed of 40 words per minute or more
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have permission to work in the United States
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation

The following are PREFERRED but not required to apply:

  • EMD, EFD, EPD
  • State of CT Telecommunicator Certification
  • Reside in Service Area towns (Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Bethlehem, Derby, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Prospect, Roxbury, Seymour, Waterbury, Wolcott, Woodbury)
  • CPR Certification
  • COLLECT/NCIC Certification

**Must be available for Days, Evening, Overnights Weekends & Holidays.

Pre-Employment Testing Required

Multi-phased computer based tests will be used as a means of determining the suitability of each applicant for this position. These tests will assess your computer skills, reading comprehension, map reading skills, multi-tasking ability; an additional test will assess personality. Achieving a passing score on each testing component will be required to continue in the process.

Candidates who have been extended a job offer will be required to submit to pre-employment drug testing and a State/Federal fingerprint-supported background check prior to beginning employment.
