Job Summary:
Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing low, moderate, and high-complexity tests and procedures in two or more laboratory sections. Performs procedures and processes specimens using appropriate equipment and instruments available, and in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures.
Job Functions:
- Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood and urine, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
- Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs. Sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
- Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
- Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage.
- Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data; selecting corrective steps.
- Operates, calibrates and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, computer-controlled analyzers.
- Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
- Provides technical information about test results to physicians.
- Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction.
- Completes projects by assisting project team; attending and participating in group and project meetings.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
- Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
- Initiates troubleshooting and corrective actions.
- Performs advanced maintenance and troubleshooting procedures as Lead Operator according to analyzer guidelines and laboratory protocol.
- Ensures calibration verification and analyzer correlations are performed;
- Aids in the evaluation of precision, accuracy and reproducibility to confirm analyzer function according to guidelines and protocol.
- Maintains and orders appropriate reagents and supplies for analyzers and specimen testing; maintaining budget awareness.
- Reports mandated information to the public health department (DHEC) or other designated officials.
- Reviews and maintains data for patient chart review from EMR; collects and reports data of incorrect specimen ordering and processing from site.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
Education: Medical laboratory techs are generally required to have an Associate or Baccalaureate degree with a major in medical laboratory science or technology, biology, microbiology, chemistry or another area of science generally qualify individuals for the job.
Licensure: Licensed as required in the state of South Carolina.
Certification: Certification as a medical technologist (MLT) by the Board of Registry of ASCP or the National Certification Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technology (AMT).
Experience: One year of recent clinical experience preferred.
System Experience: Basic Computer knowledge and skills in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) desirable.
