The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Research Operations Manager for the Investigations department. In this position you will manage all manner of research operations related to HSUS’s priority initiatives and train researchers assigned political, oppositional, and less complex research projects; Assists with surveillance and investigative matters as needed.

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting required/effective management responsibilities, ensuring that all activities, including staff management, are performed in compliance with the organization’s values; its budget/fiscal responsibility expectations; and other established organizational policies, standards, and procedures. Ensuring that the responsibilities, authority, and accountability of all direct reports are defined and understood. Providing guidance on how to troubleshoot issues, reviewing research references, , finalizing reports, etc.;
  • Conducting research based on the needs of different departments. Presenting final product to project leaders;
  • Coordinating with other organizational campaigns and programs with the Senior Director, researching possible future assignments for political and oppositional research;
  • Providing training and guidance to researchers on appropriate information-gathering techniques; FOIA requests, background checks, formatting, documentation, etc.;
  • Remaining current on modern research techniques through approved webinars, courses, or applications;
  • Reviewing and reconciling temporary researchers’ timesheets for hours worked and expenses;
  • Assisting with recruiting and hiring of future staff of the department;
  • Managing a team of researchers;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience required;
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in research administration, computer science, or investigations required;
  • Management/supervisory experience preferred;
  • Experience with any campaigns or programs within the organization a plus;
  • Experience in fact-based writing a plus;
  • Skilled with basic operations of research applications and technology is required; knowledge of government data collection (FOIA requests, courthouse databases, etc), Lexis Nexis, and alternative research databases is desirable. Research experience surrounding the organization’s campaigns, or related topics, is desirable. Ability to lead and guide staff to meet department and organizational goals. Strong knowledge of staff management practices. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;
  • Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
  • Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.

This position is based in the Washington DC Metro Area – Remote eligible.
