JOB TITLE: Groundman

SALARY RANGE: $32.92

HOURS: 40 Hours/week

SUBJECT TO: Successful completion of pre-employment physical; Drug/alcohol screening required. New employees 1-year probationary period. Existing employees 6-month probationary period.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under direction of the Light Department Senior Working Foreman, Manual work in assisting in various field operations of the Light Department; related work as required. Performs a variety of routine and repetitive tasks, with work checked during progress and upon completion for satisfactory performance. Acts in a capacity of a learner, assistant or helper. Makes few contacts beyond immediate associates. Continuous and strenuous physical effort demanded in walking, bending, standing and lifting or carrying equipment, tools and materials. The apprentice line worker position is an entry level position that is expected to progress to the lineman position. The lineman position requires working on energized lines from extreme heights, while using a bucket truck or climbing of poles. Linemen are also required to be on standby and be able to respond to the Town of Holden within 30 minutes. Full compliance with NESC, OSHA, DOT and HMLD safety procedures is required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*:

· Collects and carries tools and materials as directed

· Assembles material and equipment on the ground

· Learns use of tools and equipment needed in line construction and distribution work.

· Reading of water and electric meters.

· Ensures the proper maintenance and upkeep of equipment, stock and vehicles.

· Assists with digging setting, framing and guying poles.

· Assists installing electric conduit in trenches

· Takes necessary training to qualify as apprentice lineman

· Tree Trimming.

· Street Lighting.

· Locating underground lines for Dig Safe.

· Safety orientated individual following National Electric Safety Code, and OSHA standards.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school graduate or equivalent.

· Possess or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (with air brake endorsement) within a year.

· Possess or obtain a Massachusetts hydraulic license (1B & 2A) within a year.

· Possess or obtain a MA DOT certificate upon appointment

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Experience in the utility field

· Completion of accredited apprenticeship training program

· Knowledge of Electrical Theory

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Must be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in a non-office environment with exposure to all types of weather conditions including severe weather.

· Walking, standing and climbing while performing duties, frequent physical effort demanded in working in cramped positions or on poles.

· Exposure to electrical hazards and extreme weather conditions during emergency situations.

· Occasional travel is required to attend meetings and conferences and to respond to emergencies.

· Must be physically able to physically work in field operations.

· Must be able to work nights, week-ends, and holidays, with extended hours during emergencies.

· Must be able to have regular attendance.
