The Clinical Research Physician will be assigned inpatient and/or outpatient clinical assignments and conduct research projects under the mentorship of a Principal Investigator. As a clinical provider, the Clinical Research Physician will provide urgent, emergent, and routine care to any patient assigned to his/her panel. As a researcher, the Clinical Research Physician will be responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing a study, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of design issues, IRB considerations and manuscript preparation. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Clinical Responsibilities:
- The Clinical Research Physician will maintain a schedule of visits appropriate to the patient(s)' medical conditions, medical stability, present and previous medical history.
- Properly define and describe patient symptoms and problems, clarify and verify diagnoses, relate diagnoses to patient problems, and help establish a realistic prognosis and care goals.
- Review the patient's total program of care, including medications and treatments, at each regularly scheduled visit, and a plan to address relevant medical issues. Care includes medical services and medication management, physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy, nursing care, nutritional interventions, social work and activity services that maintain or improve psychosocial functioning.
- Determine progress of each patient's condition at the time of the regulatory visit by evaluating the patient, talking with healthcare staff, talking with responsible parties and/or family as indicated, and reviewing relevant information, as needed.
- In consultation with the hospital staff, determine appropriate services and programs for a patient, consistent with diagnoses, conditions, prognosis, and patient and family goals and wishes, focusing on helping patients attain their highest practicable level of functioning in the least restrictive environment.
- Handle all routine orders such as laboratory and radiology tests on pre and post-operative patients as deemed appropriate.
- Document in the electronic health record each and all patient visits, assessments, examinations, interventions, etc, with, at minimum, a progress note entry.
- Conduct or arrange for palliative care counseling and pain management interventions when it is determined that the patient is terminally ill or has a life limiting condition that may benefit from these services.
- The Clinical Research Physician will pronounce the death of any patient on his/her watch, and if/as required in the circumstances, request autopsy, assist with organ donor requests, and communicate diplomatically with staff and family.
- The Clinical Research Physician will arrive on duty in a timely manner. Leave duty only after reporting significant patient information to the on-coming Clinical Research Physician. At no time will the Clinical Research Physician leave the hospital premises until another physician has arrived to provide services in his/her area.
- The Clinical Research Physician will comply with and implement the Continuous Improvement philosophy as well as all hospital, health, human relations, safety, personnel and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Promote and conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
Research Responsibilities:
- Responsible for a variety of specialized research activities. Collaborates in conjunction with the principal Investigator and research team members in the development of study protocols.
- Prepares all correspondence to the Institutional Review Board for all research projects.
- Maintains knowledge and familiarity with current scientific literature and contributes to the process of a project within his or her scientific discipline, including investigating, creating, and developing new methods and technologies for project advancement.
- Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses.
- Prepares reports of completed projects for publication in technical journals, for presentation to agency requesting project, and/or for use in further applied or theoretical research activities.
- Assist investigators in grant writing and submission, manuscript preparation and submission, literature searches, literature review and summary.
- Identifies any issues or potential issues, and assists with development and implementation of solutions in a timely manner.
- Participates in conferences related to the research projects.
- Utilize hospital's behavioral standards of RESPECT as the basis for decision making and to support the department's and the hospital's goals.
- Perform other duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
- Degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges or approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must have a valid license as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy in the state of Massachusetts.
EXPERIENCE:
- Must have at least 3 years of clinical experience. Candidates with experience or interest in substance use disorder research is a plus
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required to interact with internal and external contacts in a courteous and customer service manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively in formal and oral presentations.
- Superior analytical skills, to critically evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, decompose high -level information into details and to translate statistical data to a more general level of understanding.
- Ability to be self-directed and able to set priorities and balance numerous responsibilities.
- Ability to anticipate objections and plan appropriate responses; ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and to solve problems as they occur.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers. Experience with statistical analysis tools a plus.
- Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
